PROMOTING ACCESS TO JUSTICE
The Delaware Bar Foundation Incorporated in 1981
The Foundation receives both IOLTA and non-IOLTA funding which support the two sides of its operations. Funds which flow from the Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program support legal services to the indigent in Delaware. The program is administered by the Foundation and governed by the Delaware Supreme Court. Contributions to the Foundation outside of the IOLTA program fund all aspects of its mission.
The Foundation actively supports the Combined Campaign For Justice in conjunction with Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (CLASI), Legal Services Corporation of Delaware (LSCD), and Delaware Volunteer Legal Services (DVLS). In addition, the Foundation also supports programming that enhances public respect for the law and fosters knowledge of citizenship rights and responsibilities. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors of 12 members serving four-year terms, one of whom is always a justice of the Delaware Supreme Court. Each year, one member is appointed by the Chief Justice of Delaware, one member is appointed by the President of the Delaware State Bar Association, and one member is elected by the Delaware State Bar Association. The Foundation operates through standing committees and has established an endowment fund to assure future financial support.
The Foundation also publishes Delaware Lawyer, which features articles of legal interest. It is issued quarterly under the supervision of a board of editors.
