In 1950 when Sarah and Fred Bulah sued in the Court of Chancery of Delaware to challenge Delaware’s segregated approach to education it involved their daughter’s transportation (or lack thereof) to Hockessin School 107c. Decided in 1952, two years before the ruling in Brown, the Delaware court ruled to end segregation in education – a decision that would be the only decision affirmed by the US Supreme Court’s 9-0 decision on May 17, 1954 in Brown. In this transcript, we speak with Sonny Knott who was a student at Hockessin 107c – one of the schools at issue in the litigation – about his experiences there and his recollections of the community impact of the Bulah family’s decision to sue.
