The Delaware Bar Foundation joins the Supreme Court, Delaware bar and all Delawareans in mourning the passing of Justice Randy J. Holland, a steadfast supporter of the Foundation with his time, talent and treasure. Justice Holland first served on the board of the Foundation from 1985-1986. He later returned to the board for nine years, from 1994-2003 and then again in 2014.
During and following those years of service, Justice Holland passionately supported the scholarship element of our mission. In our most recent Winter 2021 issue of the Delaware Lawyer, Justice Holland authored an article about the Delaware constitution. Previously, he advocated for a 2019 issue that celebrated the 95th anniversary of the first women admitted to the Delaware bar. In 2013, he participated in a roundtable discussion about appellate practice in Delaware and in 1993 he described his work as chair of a national Child Support Judicial Advisory Committee. These contributions highlight Justice Holland’s diverse contributions and broad impact on our courts, our practice and our state.
Justice Holland generously donated the proceeds of two of his books to the Foundation. The first, Delaware’s Destiny Determined By Lewes examines the history and the legal battles that allowed Delaware to become a state, not just a part of Pennsylvania or Maryland. Justice Holland also donated the proceeds of a second book, Middle Temple Lawyers and The American Revolution, which describes the participation of Middle Temple-educated lawyers in crucial events leading up to and through the American Revolution. To date, the funds the Foundation has received from these book sales total nearly $18,000.
We join the citizens of Delaware and members of the Delaware bar in mourning his passing and celebrating his contributions that made Delaware a better place.
